One of the most anticipated September events in Hyannis, Cape Cod, is the annual fireworks display. Every year, visitors and locals gather to celebrate summer with a breathtaking pyrotechnic show that lights up the night sky to celebrate the end of summer. Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of this spectacular tradition.
When to Experience the Fireworks
Hyannis doesn’t have a July 4th fireworks show due to ongoing concerns with the piping plover migration, a federally protected species of bird that visits our area in early summer. Instead, Hyannis has a fireworks display called “Second Summer” that typically take place around Labor Day to celebrate the end of the vacation season. The show kicks off shortly after sunset, usually around 8PM. It’s a perfect way to cap off a day filled with beach fun, family activities, and patriotic celebrations. After the show wraps up, stay tuned for the neighborhood fireworks show which often rivals the town’s display! It takes place directly in front of our house and is best viewed from the roof deck.
Best Places to View the Fireworks
The fireworks show takes place right over Lewis Bay and can easily be seen from our roof deck or from any of the neighborhood beaches. We recommend getting a few pizzas and ice cream cones and settling back to watch the show!
If you prefer larger crowds, here are some of the popular public spots to catch the show:
1. Aselton Park: Located right on the waterfront, Aselton Park offers an unobstructed view of the fireworks over Hyannis Harbor. It’s a popular spot, so arriving early to secure a good spot is recommended. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs and settle in for a fantastic evening.
2. Veterans Memorial Park: Another excellent viewing location, Veterans Memorial Park provides a scenic backdrop with its lush greenery and proximity to the water. This park is great for families, offering plenty of space to spread out and enjoy a picnic before the fireworks begin.
3. Kalmus Beach: For those who prefer a beach setting, Kalmus Beach is an ideal choice. Situated a bit further from the harbor, it still offers great views of the fireworks, with the added benefit of a relaxing beach atmosphere. It’s a great spot to enjoy the show with the sound of waves in the background.
4. Hyannis Harbor: If you want to be right in the heart of the action, consider finding a spot along Hyannis Harbor. The harbor area fills up quickly, but the views are unmatched, and you’ll be right where the fireworks are launched.
5. On the Water: For a truly unique experience, consider watching the fireworks from a boat. Several local businesses offer special fireworks cruises that provide a front-row seat to the display. It’s a memorable way to enjoy the event, surrounded by the calm waters of the harbor.
Tips for a Great Fireworks Experience
- Arrive Early: The best spots fill up quickly, so plan to arrive well in advance to secure a good viewing location.
- Bring Essentials: Pack a blanket or lawn chairs, snacks, and water. Don’t forget insect repellent to keep the bugs at bay. The no-see-ums can get pretty rough at night that time of year.
- Parking: Parking can be challenging on busy event days. Consider carpooling, using public transportation, or parking further away and walking to the viewing area.
- Respect the Environment: Be mindful of your surroundings and dispose of trash properly to keep the parks and beaches clean.
- Stay Safe: Follow any guidelines or instructions from event organizers and local authorities to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
The show typically lasts 20 minutes or more so, gather your family and friends, find the perfect viewing spot, and get ready to be dazzled by the vibrant colors, loud booms, and spectacular sights of this classic Cape Cod fireworks show.
